CE 4.2

1. How many students attend an AISD school? Page A1 "Austin district no longer...."

83,591 students attend an AISD school.

2. How (not how much) will Big Ben State Park potentially grow by 578 acres? Page B1 "Big Bend State Park..."

The state park is participating in an exchange that will swap 607 acres of public land for 1,185 acres of private land.

3. What are the Pantone colors of the year? Page SA2 "New top Pantone colors..."

Rose Quartz and Serenity are the Pantone colors of the year.

4. Do you know anyone who colors? What do you think about this new trend? Page D1 "Coloring Craze"

My therapist and my mom color. I think it's a funny and harmless thing for people to be interested in and it's an artistic way to relieve stress.

5. Which of these would you like to attend this weekend if you could? WHY? Page D2 "The Long Weekend"

I want to attend the exhibit at the Bullock museum, I'm a fan of Southwestern art and history. I'd like to learn about the Mexican-American civil rights movement.

According to the article on page 1 "Scientists: 2015 is hottest year ever recorded" global warming isn't slowing down. Read the article and respond to the prompts below"

1. What is the major cause of global warming, according to the article?

The primary cause of global warming is greenhouse emissions. These gases trap warm air in the atmosphere and cause weather and climate abnormalities.

2. What are some consequences of higher global temperature?

Higher global climate causes more extreme weather events, and natural disasters attributed to weather are more frequent and severe. In addition to making warm places dangerously hot, polar ice caps can melt and cause the oceans to rise.

3. Do you worry about global warming?

I worry about global warming because it's a generational problem- it's mostly caused by older generations and will be passed onto mine and the one after me. Not only will I see the extreme effects that it will cause, I will begin to see the problem itself worsen unless a solution can be implemented. It's more indirect and seems distant compared to other issues, but directly impacts our future.

4. What do you think can we do as a society to slow global warming?

We can reduce emissions made by big corporation- I find that a lot of blame is placed on the individual. While buying a reusable water bottle definitely helps, I think larger companies and organizations can do more directly to alleviate the problem- not bottling water in the first place. Air pollution also plays a big factor, and many factories around the world have no policies regarding emissions.

5. Do you think global warming is major issue in our world today?

Global warming isn't as big of an issue as it should be, and as always it will be forgotten until an event happens that can indisputably be linked to it. When 2015 was announced as the hottest year on record, some disagreed and blamed other unlikely causes. I think we'll see more of that kind of denial until the issue escalates to the point of no return.
