Huntington story

  "DOG SHOOTS WOMAN"

An accident involving the misfire of a Barstow, California woman's firearm on Wednesday began an investigation that uncovered possible criminal charges. The accident caused an injury and is being investigated by the county's district attorney office.

Officials at the scene described the incident that occurred at around 10 pm.  “It could have been worse,” California Highway Patrol press liaison Tammy Rye said . “The bullet hit two inches from the gas tank,” According to Rye, Janice Jones, 53, was shot in the leg with her own handgun at about 10 pm while sitting outside her motor home on Beach Boulevard. She says the weapon discharged after hitting the floor and passed through Jones' leg and the side of her motor home.

Jim Washington, spokesperson for Huntington Beach Hospital, confirmed that Jones was treated for her injuries but gave no other information. An ambulance arrived via Highway 1 and transported her to the hospital. Following the incident the property was investigated. Jones' Pomeranian, Tombo, was placed in custody of Huntington Beach Animal Control.

“It could have done with a little less abuse and a few more of those pork chops,” Huntington Beach Animal Control officer Janet Ngo said. She cited cigarette burns on Tombo's head and its malnourished state and stated she will explore pressing charges on Jones for animal abuse. Additional charges are also being considered.

"Jones doesn’t have a permit for the gun," Rye said. Officers also ticketed Jones for the expired plates on her motor home.
